Compass Rose is a violin duo consisting of Lucia Thomas and Sam Hyson, who love to travel and learn music from around the world. Through their capacities to warmly relate to anyone and learn music by ear, they have picked up songs from Mexico, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Asia, Appalachia and beyond.

For this performance, Compass Rose is featuring music of the Arab world. Joining them will be their good friend and percussionist Nathan Torrence on frame drum. Nathan has an insatiable appetite for rhythm and trance, and he wants to share that with you! Together, Compass Rose wishes to allure the Tribal Stomp community to sway, dance, swing and shake to a range of Arab musical repertoire!

With a treasure-trove of talents stashed in her coin belt, Lehvanah Saada has been mesmerizing audiences since 2008. Whether she's shimmying for her supper in a desert caravan or setting hearts ablaze with her fans of flame (in accordance with local fire-codes), this spellbinding performer (tried twice for witchcraft with no convictions) amazes and enthralls with a soulful serenade on her lips and serpentine slink in her hips (anti-venom not included).

Phoenix Flower (via Julie Brannen) burns and blooms to the rhythms of being. Her lifelong journey with movement has brought her experiences within creative, performative, and therapeutic practices. She is the creator of Heart Leading Pathways, a vehicle for embodiment, empowerment, enrichment, enlivenment, and enlightenment. As an artist and a healer, she brings people back into their bodies with a felt sense of home by owning their truth and stepping into their power. She is currently practicing as a dance/movement therapist, teaching artist, and professional dancer with various organizations and artists. She facilitates an embodied, whole-hearted, and compassionate practice of fiercely approaching vulnerability in order to release emotional blocks, re-pattern limiting beliefs, access inherent creativity, and empower an internal source of healing, transformation, and abundance. She believes whole-heartedly in the power of movement to transform and heal; aligning with her passions, curiosities, and strengths, guiding her journey, and creating meaning in her life.

Ochin Pakhi is a new Chicago group, inspired by Baul and other folk-musical traditions of West Bengal, India. The Bauls themselves are wandering mystic minstrels, who believe in connecting with the divine in a very free-spirited and unorthodox nature. To the Bauls, the human body is a microcosm of the Universe, and a gateway to connecting with Supreme Being.

Ochin Pakhi means literally “unknown bird,” a Sufi-poetic reference to the deep and perpetual mystery of life. Throughout our lives we seek to know ourselves better, and as we go deeper, we find there is always further to explore. For each of us, the interior is infinitely deep, rich, and full of discovery.

Ochin Pakhi is Subho Sengupta, vocals and ektar; Lucia Thomas, banjo; Sam Hyson, accordion; and Nathan Torrence, tablas. Lucia Thomas and Sam Hyson are epic world and folk musicians, playing all kinds from Irish, to Serbian, to Ghanaian. They are intensely collaborative and love to share musical passion with all. Nathan Torrence is a world percussionist. He has studied trance drumming in Morocco and has played with several Chicago groups. Nathan loves to stop time by keeping time, and make people dance. Subho Sengupta grew up in West Bengal learning Indian music and Tagore songs. He is the heart of Ochin Pakhi; he shares his personal experience of Indian music with the rest of the group, who eagerly soak up the feeling.

With funky, hypnotic rhythms, sensational melodies, resonant vocals, and poetic lyrics, it is this group’s passion to help you relish your body, have a deep feeling of goodness, to dance, and to connect with the divine through connection with yourself.

Radia grew up between South East Asia, UK, and US, and is currently based in Chicago. She is trained in classical Indian, Persian and Turkish dances as well as Samba, Tango and Flamenco. Radia seeks to spread awareness of different cultures and ideas through dance. Her sincere hope is that her choreography will spark curiosity, and expose people to the different ways in which humans connect through Movement and Rhythm globally!

Heart LEading PAthways (JULIE BRANNEN)

Julie Brannen, MA, LPC, R-DMT, GLCMA facilitates an embodied, whole-hearted, and compassionate practice of fiercely approaching vulnerability in order to release emotional blocks, re-pattern limiting beliefs, access inherent creativity, and empower an internal source of healing, transformation, and abundance. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and holds a Master of Arts in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling and Graduate Laban Certificate in Movement Analysis from Columbia College Chicago. Her field experience includes extensive work with women and girls recovering from eating disorders, addictive behaviors, and traumatic experiences. She currently practices as a dance/movement therapist within the community and private practice realms. She believes whole-heartedly in the power of movement to transform and heal. This quote serves as inspiration for facilitating the healing process for others: “Maybe the only enemy is that we don’t like the way reality is now and therefore wish it would go away fast. What we find as practitioners is that nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know. If we run a hundred miles an hour to the other end of the continent in order to get away from the obstacle, we find the very same problem waiting for us when we arrive. It just keeps returning with new names, forms, manifestations until we learn whatever it has to teach us about where we are separating ourselves from reality, how we are pulling back instead of opening up, closing down instead of allowing ourselves to experience fully whatever we encounter, without hesitating or retreating into ourselves.” ~Pema Chodron
